Employer branding

How quiz shows are used as an Employer Branding activity

In their landmark book Management Reset: Organizing for Sustainable Effectiveness, management experts Edward E. Lawler III and Christopher G. Worley wrote: “In addition to discouraging bad applicants, having a strong brand serves to attract individuals who otherwise wouldn’t apply for the job.”

Employer Branding in order to attract and retain high-quality talent may not be a new concept. But in the new millennium that is rigorously media-driven, organizations must evolve new methods for employer branding in media, at campuses, and at the workplace too.

Since the late 1990s, Gamification has emerged as one of the most effective and engaging mechanisms for employer brand positioning. As Richard Mosley explains in his book, Employer Brand Management: Practical Lessons from the World’s Leading Employers, “the trend is moving toward a more immersive online environment that gives potential candidates a much richer taste for the kind of employment experience on offer to them.”

Accordingly, organizations are creating an ‘immersive experience’ at all touch-points with prospective and existing employees, such as recruitment, testing candidates, building awareness, onboarding, continuous employee engagement and driving organizational change.

Recent examples from around the world reinforce the efficacy of this new strategy.

  • NetApp TechMaestro: NetApp, the Sunnyvale, CA-headquartered Storage and Data Management company wanted to create an employer branding initiative while hiring M.Tech students across select Indian Universities, and position themselves as a ‘technology innovator’. Quizworks designed a quiz contest for them based on NetApp innovations, general technology trends and general information. In a survey conducted after the contest, 90% of the participants said that they were now better aware of NetApp as a company.Click here to view the case study
  • CapGemini, a market leader in the Technology space conducts an annual TechChallenge in India, which is an online initiative aimed at testing the analytical and reasoning skills of UG and PG students. The program, which includes Coding and Infrastructure challenges and an online quiz contest, draws over 10,000 students every year. Since 2012, QuizWorks has been providing the content for the event. • A leading global, diversified, Hospitality company asks potential recruits to simulate real-life scenarios through a “Virtual Kitchen”. A potential ‘candidate’ or a ‘player’ walk through the virtual kitchen and handles an irate customer, orders groceries, and manages the kitchen. The company then analyzes the data of the players, identifies candidates who can handle stress and deliver orders on time, better, and invites them to the next round. This eliminates interview costs and saves time and money from hiring a wrong candidate.

Global examples include Simmons & Simmons, AT&T, British Aerospace company Thales, L’Oreal, British telecom giant Sky, BNP Paribas, Maersk, etc.

With time, more and more organizations will adopt Gamification-based strategies in order to ‘engage deeper’ and create strong differentiators for themselves in the marketplace. Those who are slow to do so need not play catch-up with the early adopters. By engaging a Gamification company, they can derive winning programs and techniques that will reap rich rewards for them in both the short and long terms.

Brain Baazi - A Quiz App

Brain Baazi – An Honest Review of the Quizzing App launched by Times Internet

Answering trivia and earning a quick buck, two of the many things that have always fascinated Indians, have been brought to the palm of your hand by Brain Baazi, a quizzing app launched by Times Internet. The app has crossed over one lakh users per day in the short duration of one month since its launch in February this year. We thought it would be a good idea to figure out the success factors of the quiz: –

  • Ease of Use:- One of the main reasons of this app’s success is the simplicity and the easiness to play and win. One click registration, no entry fees, straight forward Q&A, the app is keeping it as simple as possible. Each day the quiz goes live at 1 PM or 9 PM at night with all users playing simultaneously. The entire quiz takes place in the short duration of twenty minutes, thus making it a neatly packaged pre-dinner or post dinner activity. The questions are trivial and direct and the users get only 10 seconds to answer, thus making it ‘either you know it or don’t’ type of quiz.
  • Gameplay:- The quiz is interactive in nature, with a quizmaster conducting the quiz for the entire 20 minutes, giving insights about the various questions along with some exciting trivia. To get the audience hooked to the app, just before the quiz starts there are some short minute long video segments known as Cheat codes and Gyan Guru. These video segments give subtle hints about the questions that will come in the quiz.
  • Prize Money:- Another interesting factor of Brain Baazi is that it doesn’t follow the traditional “single winner takes it all” format.  The prize money of Rs 50,000 or Rs 1,00,000 is shared among all the users who are able to answer all the questions correctly, thus allowing multiple users to have a part of the prize money.  After each question, the user gets to know how many people have answered the question correctly and how many people are still there in the contest, giving the users the idea of the prize money that they can get. This ensures repeated login to the app.

This app is ideal for people who love trivia and would like to win some money out of it. The short duration of the quiz, simplicity and the money incentive work in its favor. With mobile apps quickly replacing television as the main source of entertainment, it remains to be seen whether it would bring in the same aura and charm that KBC provided in the late nineties.

How Quiz shows are used for creating awareness on Employer Value Proposition

2017 Gallup study revealed that a disengaged workforce is one of the largest hurdles to innovation and quick growth in the digital economy. Nearly 71% of American employees aren’t fully engaged at work, which costs $30 billion in lost productivity, annually. In much the same way, highly engaged workforces outperform their peers by 147% in earnings per share, show 25-65% less turnover and 37% less absenteeism. But as recent studies by Deloitte show, while 90 percent of executives understand the importance of employee engagement, fewer than 50 percent understand how to effectively address this issue.

Thankfully, quiz shows and gamification provide the missing piece of the jigsaw. By harnessing gamification’s attributes such as narrative, leaderboards, scores, quiz games, levels, rules, badges and skills, the employee value proposition can be communicated very effectively across departments, roles and geographies within the organization.

But why quiz shows and gamification?

According to the Brandon Hall Group, Employee Value Proposition or EVP may provide a competitive advantage by requiring the company to have:

  • A formal process for capturing employee metrics
  • Creative mechanisms for employee engagement activities
  • Continuous analysis of data to identify gaps
  • Growth and Development opportunities for performance improvement
  • A sound communication strategy aligned with business goals

In order to make these lofty goals less abstract or intangible, HR departments must work overtime to translate them into specific initiatives. Quiz contests and gamification makes this easy for the organization and helps them to organize fun employee engagement activities

Real-world examples

  • A major Indian multinational wanted an employee engagement technique to drive key values of the company. QuizWorks which was engaged for the project designed ‘Values Quiz’, a gamified quiz targeting 2000 employees across 8 cities. Associative Studies Methodology was implemented to transfer key learnings of the values module for better reinforcement. Subsequent surveys revealed that 92% of the participants rated the quiz as a better form of employee engagement and learning than traditional models.

  • Accenture, one of the market leader in the Technology space has been a stalwart in employing gamification for fun employee engagement activities.
  • Accenture Land: An online game that queries employees about training programs, social benefits, career development opportunities and CSR initiatives.
  • Eco challenge: An annual global program that encourages employees to change their habits and hence reduce their environmental impact.
  • Risk Management Solutions have turned an internal re-branding into a trading card game.
  • Deloitte created a ‘Deloitte China Virtual Tour campaign; where Deloitte’s offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai were virtually mapped. This helps job-seekers explore every department and get a firsthand look at working in China.

Conclusion

Research and strategic analysis firm Mind Commerce expects the market for gamification will cross $10 billion in 2020. This is not surprising considering that a significant part of the workforce by then will comprise millennials. And as research by Brandon Hall Group shows, top-performing employees want to understand a company’s mission, values, successes, and losses as much as any executive does. However, in today’s digital economy, time and attention are scarce and resources precious, so employees are likely to explore activities that are more fun, rewarding and offer opportunities to achieve, grow and socialize. Goals that quiz shows and gamification precisely achieves with ease!
